n arrest can leave you trying to figure out several things at once. You may have paperwork showing a criminal charge and court date but still have no idea what evidence police collected, whether you could face jail, or how the case could affect your job, license, family, and record. If police are investigating but have not made an arrest, the uncertainty can be just as difficult.

Your court date is only one part of the process. An invitation to explain what happened can sound informal. Investigators may already have collected statements and other evidence before making that request, and what is said during an interview may become part of the case if charges are later filed. There is no defense strategy that makes sense for every person charged with a crime. One case may call for challenging a traffic stop or search. Another may involve self-defense or conflicting witness accounts. In another situation, negotiations may provide a path that makes more sense than taking every disputed issue to trial. The person’s circumstances matter too. A first arrest can present different concerns from a new charge involving someone already on probation or with prior convictions.
